“You can’t go to dinner looking like that,”
Nick comments as I walk down the stairs.
I look down at my favourite red dress.
What’s wrong with it? I ask, confused.
“It’s so short, you’re asking for my mother to
call you all kinds of names.”
“So, the problem isn’t what I’m wearing, it’s
the fact that your mother would say nasty things
about me?”
Nick quickly explains, “Sorry to burst your
bubble, but the winnings are split nine ways.”
“How much did I win?” I ask him. “Is it
R30 million divided equally between nine
winners? How much is that?”
After a moment of silence, he says, “I won
just over R3,3 million.” That small word ‘I’
suddenly wedges a global rift between us.
After picking up the clothes from the lounge
floor and the G-string from the top of the wine bottle.
I wake up my date for Mass, reminding him how we
agreed to start dating again as we did before we
moved in together.
In the shower, we both agree to take Eddie’s advice
and give Thembi a shot at helping us.
